Following Christ

So, what does actually mean to be a follower of Christ? The term “Christian” has been used for many years to identify people who claim to be followers of Jesus, but in this day in age “Christian” can me a lot of things like someone identifying to be Christian because they grew up going to church on Sundays, or because they believe in a God of some sorts. During Jesus’ ministry on earth he identified his disciples as those who would deny themselves and follow him despite the cost, because they understood that following Jesus was the greatest way to show that they belonged to him. Followers of Jesus believe that it is by grace that we have been saved, and that truth should directly influence how we live each day. We don’t rely on our own works, but trust in Christ’s saving work in our lives to move us into action. To be a Christian means that you are a follower of Jesus Christ, and if you have yet to be baptized click on the tab below. We would love to help you make this public proclamation of your faith.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” -Ephesians 2:8-9

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” - II Corinthians 5:17
“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?  By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?  Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” - Romans 6:1-4

FOUNDATIONAL BELIEFS

Whether you’re building a one-story home or a skyscraper the need to have a strong and stable foundation is always the key to success. The same is true when we start our faith journey. We need to make sure we have solid foundational beliefs in order to navigate this life journey. The beauty of the bible is that it speaks to so many great foundational elements of the faith, so we took three beliefs that will help build a strong foundation to your faith journey. The three beliefs are that we believe that the bible is God’s inspired word given to us, we believe in the Trinity that God is Father, son, and Holy spirit, and we believe that it is by grace through faith that we are saved. We trust that the bible is without error and speaks to the issues of the world today. The bible is alive and active in our lives and we can trust in it. We believe that God is revealed to us in scripture in the persons of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person of the Trinity faithfully speaks into the great narrative of the world and our lives. And once again, we believe that it is by grace through faith that we are saved. God searched for us long before we started searching for him and it is faith in him that we have been saved. These foundational beliefs along with others revealed in scripture will help in your next steps of the faith journey.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” - Hebrews 4:12

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoiced in hope of the glory of God.” - Romans 5:1

GROWING MY FAITH

Now that we have set a good foundation for our beliefs, it’s time talk about how we grow in our faith. There are so many great practices that we can engage in that leads to healthy spiritual growth, so out of those practices we’ve selected three that will help produce growth in your faith. It’s so important to engage in God’s word on daily basis, connect to the power of prayer, and get involved in a community of believers if we want to see growth in our faith. Diving into scripture not only tells us about who God is but it helps shape and mold us into the form of our savior Jesus Christ. As we read the bible we see and observe how Christ lived, and by His power we take these words to heart and align ourselves to how he calls us to live. God’s word is our constant companion in life and we can always turn to it to direct us in the way we should go or to weather the storms we face in life. Incorporating prayer in our faith journey is so important, because it connects us straight to God on a daily basis. There is power in prayer because God always listens to prayer and promised to sustain his children as we present our needs daily before him. As we read the bible and pray we can also make intentional connections in a community of believers. We were never meant to do life alone and God has placed the church to be a community where we can find support and encouragement throughout this faith journey. By incorporating these three practices we will see our faith grow, and our hope is that spiritual growth would exponentially grow in whatever season of life you find yourself in.

“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” - Romans 8:9-11

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” - 2 Peter 3:18

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” - 2 Timothy 3:16-1
